How long a bathroom renovation actually takes

The honest answer for a full bathroom renovation is usually three to five weeks on site, with two to six weeks of planning and ordering before anyone arrives. Here is where that time goes.

Before anyone arrives

1. Site assessment and measurement: one visit.
2. Design direction and material selection: one to three weeks, driven almost entirely by how quickly decisions get made.
3. Proposal and agreement: a few days.
4. Ordering and lead times: this is the long pole. Stocked tile ships in days; made-to-order material can take four to six weeks.

On site

1. Protection and demolition: one to two days.
2. Structure, plumbing, and electrical rough-in: two to five days, depending on what demolition revealed.
3. Substrate and waterproofing: two to three days, including a flood test where the assembly calls for it.
4. Tile: three to eight days, depending on area, format, and pattern.
5. Grout, sealant, and cure time: two days, some of which is waiting rather than working.
6. Fixtures, glass, and finishing: two to four days. Shower glass is usually templated after tiling and takes a week to come back.

What adds time

Two things dominate. The first is a change of mind after material has been ordered. The second is what is found behind the wall on day one — historic leaks, undersized framing, and non-compliant wiring are all common in older houses and none of them can be quoted in advance.

We build a contingency into the schedule for the second and communicate immediately when we find something. We are also honest that the first is expensive; a decision reversed after ordering rarely costs less than a week.

Living through it

If it is your only bathroom, say so at the first conversation. The sequence can be arranged to keep the room usable for parts of the project, but only if that is planned rather than improvised.
