The unit you choose matters. How it is installed matters more. A short guide to the decisions that determine whether a replacement actually performs.

Concept image — replace with documented site photography
Window replacement is sold on the product and delivered by the installation. A well-specified unit fitted without a sill pan, without air sealing, or out of square will underperform a modest unit fitted properly.
An insert replacement fits a new unit inside the existing frame. It is quicker and less disruptive, and it reduces the glass area slightly. A full-frame replacement removes everything back to the rough opening, which allows the flashing and air sealing to be rebuilt and any concealed damage to be found and repaired.
If the existing frames are sound, an insert is a reasonable choice. If there is any sign of water, full-frame is the only way to know what you are dealing with.
In older masonry, no two openings are the same. Every opening should be measured individually and scheduled. A quote based on a count of windows and one measurement is a quote that will produce site problems.
Expect to find something
On most whole-house replacements at least one opening reveals concealed damage. We photograph it, explain it, and price the repair before continuing.
Energy performance figures belong to the manufacturer and are measured under laboratory conditions. We will pass on the published figures for whatever unit you choose. We will not attach a saving estimate to them, because the honest answer depends on your house, your heating system, and your habits.
